Okinawan Critters

Just like in Hawaii, geckos are common here. They're pretty fast so I got this pic online. This bug, called the cicada (sekayda), is said to be the noisiest in the world. It can be heard up to a mile and a half away. There are so many of them in the trees and wooded areas that they fill the air with their loud clacking. During and after the rain they are quiet, I assume because they are wet. When they die, they leave a shell behind that the kids like to play with! They are about 2 inches long and one inch thick. Even alive they are harmless, just noisy and ugly. This is our friend Kyle modeling a cicada shell for the camera.I got the cicada picture online, and I also got this spider online. The one I took was very similar, but the spider wasn't as visible. This spider, if you include his legs, is the size of an adult's open hand. Loved the butterflies. We saw many in other places besides the Butterfly Garden, but they flew away before I could capture them with the camera. We can't leave out the jellyfish! For 4 months out of the year, June-September, you can't go out into the ocean without protection from them. Anything that thouches them is stung and the stings are very dangerous, painful and potentially life-threatening. Comercials are on tv warning people to be prepared when going to the beach. Some beaches have netted off areas to keep the jellyfish out making it safe for people to enjoy. These are the very hungry fish at Ryukyu-mura that Isabel fed. They were crazy the way they competed for food! If you walked beside the water they would follow you in droves. These tiny fish are about 2 or 3 inches long and are called Doctor Fish. They munch dead skin from off your feet exfoliating them and making them smooth and soft. It took a bit of courage to put your feet in the water. They tickle. I thought the snakes they put in tequilla were nasty but this takes the idea to a whole new level! This bottle of alcohol is about 18 inches tall and there were others that were bigger! Joe says you can't take the snakes out of the country. When he sent his dad a bottle, he had to open it and remove the snake first.
