Shuri Castle

This castle and it's surrounding buildings and grounds were home and the center of government for the royal family of Ryukyu for hundreds of years.I loved noticing how the stones were amazingly fitted together. These stairs are on an incline. The tops of the stairs are not level, so even though you are walking upstairs you are also walking uphill. Probably for drainage with all the rain on this very tropical island. Here is the Shisa Lion-Dog that sits along the path to the castle bidding those who come to leave their warrior spirit outside so that peace may dwell within. Water pours from this dragon that is over 500 years old. The fountain was the water source for the castle. This fountain of water was for use in case of fire.At the top of the stairs we watched Ryukyu dancers. I wasn't able to get a good pic because of seating and weather so I got this one online. This beautiful castle was the place of the official workings of government. Visiting dignitaries stayed in these rooms. This is the courtyard and garden. From the window we were able to look over and see the home where the king and his family actually lived. These are the halls and throne room of the kings.Sliding doors are on the opposite side of this chair. They were for opening up so that the king could speak to the people below. The king's crown.
